From a combustion engine to an electric vehicle: diesel buses can now
have an environmentally friendly “second life” as an electric bus. Under
the name e-troFit, Munich-based tech company in-tech
presents a solution for professional conversion to electric drives. As a
system supplier, ZF Aftermarket contributes the necessary drive
components and at the same time offers access to their worldwide
workshop network. in-tech presents the e-troFit concept to the public at
the eMove360° trade show.
Emissions in city centers – diesel buses must get out of the city
The debate on diesel bans poses new challenges for many local
authorities: What happens to diesel buses in local public transport?
“High emission levels in city centers are forcing local authorities to
take action,” says Andreas Hager, head of the New Mobility Solutions
business unit at in-tech: “Many operators are therefore looking to get
started with electric mobility. However, replacing existing bus fleets
completely with new electric vehicles is neither economical nor
sustainable – a new electric bus is considerably more expensive than a
conventional diesel bus.
Smart, affordable, sustainable: up to 50% cost savings compared to new purchases
Retrofitting is the smart and sustainable alternative to buying a new
vehicle. The retrofit solution is up to 50% cheaper than a new vehicle.
“In addition to the lower acquisition costs, e-troFit also has other
positive aspects, as the service life of existing vehicles is extended.
Wear-prone drive components will be replaced as part of the conversion,
and thanks to the refurbishment and modernization of the passenger
compartment, a sustainable second-use of the vehicle as an electric bus
will be possible,” explains Andreas Hager.
Strategic Partnership with ZF – Conversion with Series Quality
in-tech has signed a preferred partnership with ZF Friedrichshafen AG
for the market launch of e-troFit. Helmut Ernst, Head of ZF’s
Aftermarket Division, comments: “Together with in-tech, we are offering a
one-stop shop solution for the retrofit: With AxTrax AVE
and CeTrax, ZF not only supplies the right products for this. In
addition, we provide the required expertise including workshop
capacities and act as a trading and service partner for in-tech and our
ZF supplies original components – the AxTrax AVE electric portal axle and the CeTrax electric central drive – and offers access to the worldwide workshop network. AxTrax AVE
is ideally suited for the fully electronic drive of city buses of all
manufacturers. CeTrax can be installed directly into the existing
vehicle platform without having to make major changes to the chassis,
suspension or differential. Compared to other solutions, ZF’s central
drive offers significant weight advantages, high performance, and
excellent efficiency. In combination with in-tech’s extensive
development competence, the partnership ensures that a high-quality
product comparable to a serial production vehicle is created.
Presentation at the eMove360 in Munich
At the eMobility trade show eMove360° in Munich, in-tech will present
the concept to the public together with ZF Aftermarket: As part of a
pilot project with Stadtwerke Landshut, a first bus was retrofitted. The
vehicle can be viewed during the exhibition from October 16 to 18.
